How To Stay Healthy This Winter

When you want to stay healthy during the winter, sometimes a few natural supplements may help.

Years ago, when I was much younger, my parents bought tickets for my siblings and me to go to the Nutcracker Ballet with them.  I was SO excited about it!  Early in the morning of the performance, I started to get aches, chills, and a fever.  Awhile later, my fever was much higher and I was in bed, struggling to stay warm.  Seeing the Nutcracker Ballet was one of my favorite things to do and I was devastated that I wouldn’t be able to go see it with my family that night.  A few hours later, my dad suggested that I try some Anti-Plague medicine to see if it would help me.  I took a dose, then took another dose of it a few hours later.  Then I took a long nap.  When I woke up, it was early evening and I was feeling much, much better!  My fever was gone and so were my aches and pains.  I was still a little tired, but I went to the Nutcracker Ballet and enjoyed it immensely.

Marshmallow Root may help to relieve colds and coughs by loosening mucous and relieving irritation.  And White Oak Bark is beneficial because it is antiseptic and due to the tannins it contains.

Boiron Oscillococcinum is another supplement we recommend to help fight illness this winter.  Its active ingredient is Anas barbariae 200CK HPUS, which can reduce the duration and severity of flu-like symptoms.

Zinc helps to boost your immune system.  In a study about sepsis and how zinc can help prevent it, researchers found that zinc is responsible for helping the body to shut down an infection.  When the body recognizes a pathogen, the immune system goes into action to fight against the pathogens.  A highly active protein is activated, enters the cell and produces a zinc transporter that shuttles zinc from the bloodstream into the pathogens to shut them down.  This helps to prevent inflammation from pathogens.  Researchers believe that this process may work with colds, as well.  Please read this article to find out more.

This article also shows that zinc has a beneficial effect on the immune system, and that it can decrease oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines.

Most of us have enough zinc in our systems to help keep illness away.  However, if you take a little extra zinc when symptoms of a cold or the flu start, you might be able to decrease the amount of time you are sick.

Elderberry can combat viral infections.  In this study, participants afflicted with influenza symptoms who were given elderberry syrup, were relieved of their symptoms 4 days earlier than participants given a placebo. You can read about that here.

A study also shows that people who have taken elderberries have the ability to protect people from getting the flu due to having a higher amount of antibodies that can offer protection from influenza.
